Can You Still Get Pregnant on Non Fertile Days?

The female reproductive system is quite versatile in nature, unlike the male reproductive system. The males are potent and prolific to reproduce during their entire life.

On the contrary, females have a fertile window during which they are capable to conceive and gave birth to the baby. This fertile window is around the time when ovulation occurs for a short period of time.

However, other than these fertile days there are the least chances of getting pregnant. But the question is why there are no chances of getting pregnant if you have intercourse on your non fertile days.

In this article below, you will learn whether you can get pregnant on your non-fertile days or not.

In human females, only one egg or ovum is released from the ovaries monthly which mature and proliferate in order to form a zygote (baby). The day on which the female egg gets mature and released out of the ovary is known as ovulation.

This usually occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle for the majority of women. Normally the female cycle is of 28 days however variations exist. In this 28 day cycle, ovulation could occur on any day between 12 to 16 days. See Ovulation calculator and due date calculator for further learning.

Fertilization is the process during which the male sperm gets fused with the female egg and forms the embryo. It occurs as successful copulation resulting in the process of reproduction.

Before it can be fertilized by a sperm, the egg travels to the fallopian tubes in the ovaries. Assuming this process is successful, the fertilized egg turns into a zygote, which divides rapidly to create an implanted cluster of cells in the uterine lining, this is the first step of pregnancy.

After it is released from the ovary, an egg has the highest chance of being fertilized between 12 and 24 hours after being released. When the conditions are right, men’s sperm can live in a woman’s body for up to 5 days following the sexual intercourse.

Non-Fertile Days

The female cycle consists of three phases namely, the follicular phase, the ovulation and the luteal phase. The ovulatory days are regarded as the fertile days for women to conceive.

Whereas the follicular phase is the initial phase during which the egg gets matured for fertilization. In contrast, during the luteal phase, the female egg starts to degenerate and rupture if fertilization didn’t occur.

The luteal phase and the follicular phase are the non fertile days during which the chances of being pregnant are minimum to least. As it all depends on hormone regulation it is impossible to exactly predict the starting and ending day of each phase.

However, the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle are regarded as the follicular phase whereas the last 2 weeks as the luteal phase. The last few days of follicular and initial days of the luteal phase albeit fall under the fertile window.

Higher Chances of Getting Pregnant

The fertilization only occurs on the day of ovulation or a day after, since the fertile days correspond to ovulation only. However, male sperms could sustain in the female reproductive system for 3-5 days.

Therefore, the females have a fertile window as discussed above 2-3 days before and after ovulation. During this time there are higher chances of getting pregnant. Thus if you are planning to conceive and have a baby it’s the best time for sexual activity.

It is recommended by experts to have sexual intercourse daily in the middle week of the female cycle. In this way, the chances of fertilization are the highest as the male sperms would be available (for fertilization) on the day of ovulation.

Why you can’t conceive on your non fertile days?

Well, it’s a pretty straightforward answer when the female egg is not available for the sperms to fertilize how can you conceive? The [pragnancy occurs when male and female gametes (sperm and egg respectively) fuse with one another and forms an embryo.

Subsequently, when the female egg is absent during the entry of sperms inside her cervix no fertilization could occur. Similarly, if on the day of ovulation when the female egg is ready to get fertilized and male sperms arent present there are still no chances of getting pregnant.
