Home Remedies for Nipple Itching


Nipple itching is an irritating feeling and it makes you feel awkward when you are in public places. Most pregnant mothers suffer from this problem two common problems with this itchy nipple are dryness and infection. Nipples are the most sensitive and delicate part of the body and when it is getting itchy then it is very hard to resist the itch. A great discomfort is felt but there are a few home remedies which can give you relief from itchy nipples.

20 Natural Remedies for Itchy Nipples

  1. Oil Massage – to get relief from nipple itches the most effective home remedy is massage with coconut oil. You may use other oils as well but the oil should be able to provide moisture to the skin. The special quality of coconut oil is it’s a natural moisturizer and it has antimicrobial properties. Oil massage gives moisture to the skin and relieves itches. You should heat the oil a little bit and then apply with bare hands.
  2. Butter – you can butter your nipples to keep moisturized and it will reduce the itch. Massaging butter in circular motion helps in hydrating the nipples.
  3. Aloe VeraAloe Vera is one of the great remedies for itchy nipples. Take out the pulp of the Aloe Vera leaves and apply it on the itchy nipples. Keep it for 10 minutes and then massage gently. Wash nipples with cold water after massage is done. Pat dry by using a soft face towel. Repeat until you feel better.
  4. Olive Oil–  Olive oil is one of the main home remedy to soothe the nipple itches.  It has natural moisturizing properties which is very effective for curing dry, scaly and itchy skin of the nipples. You can massage olive oil to the nipples before bath and wash it away or you may wash it off after the massage as well.
  5. Honey – Topical application of honey is effective in the case of mild itching. It softens dry skin and therefore regular use of honey makes the itchy dry skin of the nipple soft and soothes it. Apply honey at least 1-4 times a day. 
  6. Changing Your Bath Routine -do not take bath in hot waters as it can make your skin even drier and it can trigger itchiness. Soak a cloth or towel in cold water and wipe off the nipples gently.
  7. Jojoba Oil– Jojoba oil has an anti-inflammatory property which helps to soothe any kind of itches. It has antimicrobial agents as well which further helps to prevent infection. Therefore, applying  jojoba oil over itchy nipples is immensely helpful. Any cream , lotion or petroleum jelly containing jojoba oil can also be used to treat nipple itch. Runners and joggers may develop this type of itch due to constant friction. That’s why this condition is also called a jogger’s nipple. 
  8. Peppermint Tea – one of the major problems of lactating mothers is eczema , which further causes itchy nipples. In this breastfeeding period mothers develop itches, cracked nipples and eczema. So, applying peppermint tea with lukewarm water is proved to be useful according to a recent study.  
  9. Breast Milk – breast milk has many healing and antibacterial properties which can help to relieve itchy nipple lactating mothers can use this technique to soothe nipple itches.
  10. Warm Compress – warm compress can also be an option to soothe of the nipples . The heat that comes from the warm compress comforts the pain and itching. A clean and hygienic cloth or towel can be used for this purpose. Keep it for 10 minutes and leave the nipple for rest . This process will help you to gain some sort of comfort and you will start feeling better. Check for the water used for this compression as dirty water can further increase the chance of infection. You can use a heating pad as well.
  11. Basil LeavesBasil leaves have antimicrobial as well as antibacterial properties. They speed up the entire healing process of itchy nipples. They can also provide relief from bleeding nipples. Take a handful of basil leaves. Wash and grind them to create a paste. Apply the paste on itchy nipples and let it dry. Wash it off before breastfeeding your baby. Do this for 1 week and see the changes.
  12. Ice – ice massage  can also give you a temporary relief. Applying ice cubes or ice pads over itchy nipples can be very effective. This will reduce swelling and soothe itching and numbness. They also help reduce swelling. Take a few ice cubes and wrap them in a thin towel. Place the towel with ice cubed on the affected area for a few minutes. Repeat this as required.
  13. Raw Apple Cider VinegarApple cider vinegar has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. And its uses are prevalent from ancient times. Mix one cup of raw apple cider vinegar with five cups of filtered water. This solution will help to relieve itching and irritation. Soak  a clean washcloth in warm water and wash the affected area. Its anti-inflammatory property not soothes the itch but also erases dirt.
  14. Baking SodaBaking soda is a natural crystalline substance with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. Mix this powder with water and apply it over the itchy skin of the nipples and rinse it with cold water after 20 minutes. This will give you an instant soothing effect.
  15. Colloidal Oatmeal Wash – oatmeal is one of the most effective natural skin moisturizer. Washing your itchy nipples with this colloidal oatmeal mix not only cleanses the skin but also hydrates and moisturizes the skin a lot. Follow this regimen twice a week for optimum results. 
  16. Lemonslice a lemon and massage it over itchy nipples, it will cleanse as hydrate your itchy nipples.
  17. Calendula Flowers or Oil– make a paste of calendula flowers and apply it over itchy nipples, you can also mix it with olive oil before applying.
  18. Tea Tree Oil – tea tree oil has many beneficial herbal properties like antifungal, antimicrobial agents. And this tea tree oil can reduce the itch of the nipple any further infection . 
  19. Chamomile Tea BagChamomile has anti-inflammatory properties which helps to reduce swelling, itchiness, and soreness of nipples. It can also speed up the recovery process. 
  20. Vitamin C– Eating foods that contain vitamin C  because it is very effective in repairing the tissues of the skin. Eat vegetables and fruits that contains vitamin C such as lemon, orange, kiwi, mango, grapefruit, pineapple, papaya pepper, tomato, berries, and sweet potato.
