What is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)? A posterior vitreous detachment(PVD) happens when the retina and the gel that fills the eyeball separate. The back of the eyeball is lined by a thin layer of nerve tissue called the retina.  It is in charge of sensing light and converting it into visible images.
